I am Carlos de Ory. I have been starting companies since 2013, I am a dad, and these days I live between Europe and Sumba, an island one hour from Bali.
How it started
I began with travel. In 2014 I started Happy Low Cost, a community that hunts for cheap flights and shares them before they disappear. More than 300,000 flights have been booked through our deals, and the communities around it grew past one million followers.
Travel took me to live with other founders. We ran StartupsMansion in New York, a house where founders lived and built together, which Antena 3 covered on national TV. Then came Housepreneurs in Berlin, 10Entrepreneurs in Miami and, in 2020, a group of remote founders in Bali.
In 2022 Forbes España included me in its list of the 100 most creative people in business.
My path, year by year
- 2013 I start my first company.
- 2014 I launch Happy Low Cost and, in New York, StartupsMansion.
- 2015 Housepreneurs in Berlin and 10Entrepreneurs in Miami.
- 2018 SupportNear is born.
- 2020 A group of remote founders in Bali.
- 2022 Forbes España names me one of the 100 most creative people in business.
- 2023 Eco Beach City starts on Sumba.
- 2024 Equinox Investment Group LLC, home of my AI products.
What I am building now
- Eco Beach City: a town on the north coast of Sumba, with coworking, padel, solar power and homes by the sea.
- SupportNear: a free, non-profit map of more than 37,000 places in 147 countries where anyone can eat, sleep, shower or get help. No account, no tracking.
- RealHunt, SurfRanking, KlipStay and Jobersity: AI products I design and ship myself, under Equinox Investment Group LLC.
This website
carlosdeory.com started as a travel blog and now has more than 1,200 articles, many written with collaborators over the years. Today I also write here about building companies: the Million Mile Playbook on flying business class for almost nothing, and the episodes of the book I am writing, starting with Episode 1: The Day You Stop Waiting.
